Atrani is one of those hidden gems on the Amalfi Coast, and it’s often overlooked because it’s so tiny. In fact, with a surface area of only 0.12 square kilometers, Atrani is considered the smallest community in southern Italy. Only 832 people call this their home in 2024. I’m so glad I finally had a chance to visit this charming town just a few years ago, and I absolutely believe Atrani deserves a visit. After all, it’s only a ten-minute walk from Amalfi, which may prove to be the best choice for a stay on the Amalfi Coast.
Atrani’s seaside location makes it a perfect filming location for movies such as The Equalizer 3 starring Denzel Washington, a Netflix series called Ripley, and in 2012, the initial scene of a funny Fiat commercial. The church featured in The Equalizer 3 is Santuario Santa Maria del Bando, and it’s definitely a challenge if you’re up for climbing 700 steep steps from Piazza Umberto to reach this spot.
Pastel-colored homes interspersed between white buildings on various levels define the landscape like an exquisite watercolor painting.
Santa Maria Maddalena, with its prominent sixteenth-century bell tower and the yellow and green majolica tile domes can’t be missed from the perspective of the Gulf of Salerno.
You may be surprised to learn that the famous Dutch engraver and graphic artist, M.C. Escher, lived in Rome for 11 years, and was fascinated by the village of Atrani.
His 1931 work, titled “Atrani, Amalfi Coast,” one of several in his Metamorphoses series, is not the only piece in which the church of Santa Maria Maddalena appears. I understand Escher produced a beautiful crayon drawing of Atrani, in which he features a staircase. Another lithograph, titled “Dilapidated Houses in Atrani,” is part of his collection as well.
In the summertime, pretty blue-and-white umbrellas cover the pebbled beach. The highly recommended beachside restaurant, Le Arcate, with its wide terrace, welcomes guests in summer and winter to savor traditional seafood dishes for lunch or dinner.
Atrani is a place to soak up the sun in a relaxed atmosphere. By far, this is one of the best ways to experience il dolce far niente.

Lovely post as always. Two years ago, we missed our window of opportunity there. But we visited Sorrento for two wonderful days. Thank you

Thank you. Sorrento is also a beautiful place, and there isn’t time for everything. I had been wanting to visit Atrani for quite a while, and finally I got there! Always a reason to return.

Thanks. My doctor who goes to Italy every year says, “Italy rarely disappoints.” We have visited 5 times over the past dozen years ago and can’t get enough! Referring back to missing Amalfi, we loved our two days in Sorrento. And a half day in Capri, caused it rained! And we did spend a day in Pompei. Thank you
