Anyone who follows my blog, knows that I love to travel, and have a particular passion for Italy. When I’m not traveling abroad, I search for places closer to home to visit, and one of my favorite destinations is Key West, only a six-hour drive from home. Some travelers go for the wild nightlife and drinking, but I enjoy the natural beauty on an island which is also conducive to relaxation.

As a Christmas gift to each other, Richard and I left for a two-night getaway and had a fantastic time, despite the lack of sun for ninety-five percent of the time. At least the temperatures were moderate, in the seventies, and we had no rain, except on parts of the drive. We chose another accommodation this time and found it so wonderful that I decided to write a blog post about it. This is not an ad, and while I wasn’t hosted at the property, I received a complimentary upgrade upon arrival, to my great surprise. Walking to our room through a tropical garden, we meet one of the two cats who live here full-time. The first is a pic of sweet Alvin, and the next is one of his Mamma.

Simonton Court Historic Inn and Cottages is a hidden gem on a quiet street in the heart of Old Town at 320 Simonton, a block away from the busy atmosphere of Duval Street.

Originally a cigar factory, this is where workers hand rolled some of the world’s most famous cigars in 1880. They lived on the two-acre property, and their cottages, as well as the owner’s mansion and workrooms, have been completely refurbished with all modern amenities.

Today this exceptional, adults-only property is a bed and breakfast, surrounded by a lush, tropical landscape, which provides a sense of relaxation and serenity not found in other places. Four pools complete this historical property, so you feel like you are in paradise.

Jonathan, the manager, his wife Violet, and the staff, especially Kadie and Sandra, were extremely friendly and helpful. Everyone always had a smile and greeted us in a most welcoming way. When we were taken to our room, I was totally blown away to discover we were in the Manor House, a beautifully appointed King-sized suite with vaulted ceilings, huge living room, extra-large bedroom, fully equipped kitchen, large bathroom with walk-in shower, a covered terrace surrounded by a private pool and total privacy. I know we are spoiled forever now.

I especially liked the text messages to check how we were doing and to ask if we needed anything to make our stay better. A nice personal touch. The complimentary outdoor breakfast was also top-notch with a great selection, and the convenient on-site parking at a reasonable price was an added convenience. Easily, this is the best place I’ve ever stayed in Key West!

I can easily see why this Key West accommodation received a 2023 TripAdvisor certificate of excellence award, and after this extraordinary experience, I definitely want this as my first-choice accommodation the next time I travel to Key West.

Thank you to Jonathon for making our stay at Simonton Court Historic Inn and Cottages a special and memorable getaway.

Enjoy a few additional photos from our stay in Key West.

Now that I’m back home, I’m in the editing process of my latest Italy book. More to come very soon on that, including a cover reveal. Watch this space.

Such a lovely place! And Key West has so much history and unique architecture. Even the drive through the keys to get to the most famous island is a treat. I’ve only visited once during the short time that I, too, lived in Florida and have always thought it would be nice to return. Glad you enjoyed your stay!
