Once a floating pontoon built in the 12th century, the Rialto Bridge is an iconic symbol of Venice and the oldest bridge on the Grand Canal. The bridge, originally constructed from timber, today is made of stone. Although a number of artists submitted designs for the bridge, including Michelangelo, Antonio da Ponte won and built the bridge out of marble. It is also known as Ponte de Rialto.
