I loved watching this gondolier in Venice before I snapped this photo. The life of a gondolier in Venice may seem romantic, but specific requirements must be met before one attains this title. In the 16th century, over 10,000 gondoliers worked on the canals in Venice. Today the number has dwindled to a little over 400, much like the population decline in La Serenissima. It is next to impossible for someone to become a gondolier in Venice unless he was born in Venice. Of all the gondoliers working in Venice today, only one is a woman.

i have been to Venezia many times….but the last time was 25 years ago! My family used to land there and send our luggage to Foggia via train while we stayed for a few days. i am so overdue for a visit! Ciao, Cristina

I’ll say, Cristina. Time to go back once this virus is contained and it’s safe to travel again. Great memories.

One of my fondest memories in Venice is a gondola ride I took with my father, daughter and son on our last trip to Venice. My father turned 85 that year while in Venice and I will always cherish the memory of that trip. Thanks for reminding me how much I love that city!

There is nothing on earth more romantic than a trip down Venice’s canal system with a Gondolier, especially with a moon behind his shoulder. Ah, the pleasures one can find around the world that are replicated no where else in the world.

Thank you Bonnie. Just the thought of it is beautiful and romantic

I just hope I get to Venice before it sinks. What has happened since the flooding a few months ago. I haven’t heard. I think I have waited to long to go to see its glory and splendor.

I think they are pretty much back to normal after the flood, but then came this virus which closed everything down. St Marks Cathedral is undergoing restoration which will take quite a long time
