Sorrento couple photo by Margie Miklas

This couple in Sorrento touched my heart, like so many people of Italy do. They owned and operated this shop in Sorrento, and were so kind to me, allowing me to photograph them and look around their workshop. The expressions on their faces show their passion for what they do.

I had hoped to find a souvenir in Sorrento of something that was made by hand here, and intarsio wooden music boxes were exactly what I had  in mind.I bought three music boxes from them and gave two as gifts and kept one for myself. Not too many of these shops are still around anymore. and the bonus is you can choose your own music. Naturally I chose, Take me Back to Sorrento.

Have you been to Sorrento? I’d love to hear about your experiences, so please leave a comment.

Grazie and Ciao

If you haven’t followed me on Instagram yet, please check out my page. Lots more photos from Italy there. Grazie

  1. I have a music box from Sorrento. It also plays Come back to Sorrento. I bought it 45 years ago when I lived there. I also love these family owned businesses in Italy. They are the lifeblood of the country.

      Thanks Debra
I know you have a very personal connection to Sorrento as we’ve talked about… There is really something special about that place… I love my little music box

  2. I remember the first time I arrived to Sorrento was by boat. It was breathtaking and in that moment I realized that the song was just telling it like it is.
I spent a month at the language school there a number of years ago – a very nice experience.

❤️ very interesting story indeed, Karen that is so cool that you took a month of language school there… My heart belongs on the coast… But from what I’ve seen from your posts, the Calabrian coast can
      be very beautiful as well

      • Yes, it can. I’ve also done quite a bit of exploring of Basilicata recently and although its coasts are short, they’re beautiful as well and its short 20-mile stretch on the Tyrrhenian Sea continues the splendor of Campania.

How amazing, Karen. That area is so undiscovered. Your photos are phenomenal. Thanks so much for sharing

  3. You know, it’s the small touches from others that make a warm and lasting memory. Love your photo. These ladies sound very sweet!

Thank you so much, Susan. Yes, as we’ve spoken before, it’s the people that make the place, and that couple was just so adorable

  5. My very first trip to Italy was with a high school group when I was 15, and I bought a music box in Sorrento for my mom! What a lovely glimpse into this artisan workshop.

Marg it’s always good to hear from you Hon, and Happy New Year to you, 2018 is Here!!!

And since this is the first Post that I’ve seen from you this year, the moment that I saw that it was about Sorrento, well it just instantly put me in a good mood, brought me Peace of mind and Humbled me as well.

For it’s always nice to see a Husband and Wife do well as a couple for many years, because what I see from this is a Positive Example for the rest of us to adhere to.

Furthermore for them to have the ability to Thrive in Business in this way is truly a Blessing as well.

Expressing their individual Expertise for what they are Passionate about Together and it truly has been Captured in this photo…

And by them operating out of Sorrento just makes me Smile, all the more.

Therefore I wish this Wonderful Couple and You as well Marg Continued Success!!!

  8. Yes, I too found that the Italians were so warm and kind when I lived there. I was very grateful for it as it would have been difficult to make new friends there otherwise.
Sorrento is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Just heavenly isn’t it?
I’ve just found your blog and love the look of it, now following 🙂

    • margieinitaly

  9. What’s the shop called? It sounds delightful!

    • margieinitaly

Hi Sheila, Thank you so much…I don’t know the name of the shop because this is a photo from 2007. I’m not sure that same shop exists anymore. But I was in Sorrento in 2014 and I did buy some music boxes from another shop. I understand a few are left

I'd love to know what you think, so please leave a comment.
