Summer in the City

Flowers in NYC Park Photo by Margie Miklas
It’s been a long time since I’ve visited NYC in the summertime and I can attest to the fact that July in the city is hot and humid. Of course I’m used to heat and humidity, living in Florida, so I’m not complaining.

What I really enjoyed were the summer flowers blooming in Heather Garden at Fort Tryon Park in the Washington Heights neighborhood in upper Manhattan.

Part of the NYC  park system, this was a pleasant respite with its shaded walkways and paths. Every morning I walked the trails in the park for my daily exercise and I was rewarded with the fragrances of so many different varieties of flowers in Heather Garden,  the largest public garden with unrestricted access in New York City.

Here is a sampling of what I saw in the garden. Enjoy.

  1. I haven’t been to NYC yet but plan to by the end of the year. 🙂

  2. Lovely photos. Thank you for sharing so people know there is beauty in NYC. I was raised on Long Island and did many years of medical training in NYC so I had the opportunity to discover some favorite beaches and also places in Central Park, but have never been that far north on Manhattan.

    • Thanks so much Kathryn. NYC has so many beautiful parks. My son and daughter-in-law live close to this one so it was wonderful for me to be able to enjoy every morning. Central park is always a favorite too!

We have many of the same perennials in our garden in Massachusetts, and the photos are similar. Unfortunately, there’s no way to post them here. Glad you enjoyed a respite from the Florida heat (and different flora)!

    • Thank you Pam! I’m sure your weather in the summer in Massachusetts is perfect for these flowering beauties. Please feel free to post a link to your blog if you have any photos there to share !!

  4. I have not heard of Heather Garden – I’m going to have to ask my NYC family members if they know about it. Great pictures, proving that even cities have beautiful flowers!

    • Thanks Barbara..This park is in the northernmost portion of Manhattan on the west side overlooking the Hudson River and the George Washington Bridge so I am betting many have never even been here!!

  5. Lovely post, so many of these flowers grow in my home in Simla 🙂
