My Sicilian Friend Teresa

Meet my Sicilian friend, Teresa Savoca. This is a recent photo of her as she celebrated her 50th birthday! I love the cake!

Teresa is the older sister of Angela, who I have mentioned before in this blog, and we have been friends now for quite a few years.Teresa has graciously opened her home to me and my family as I traveled to Sicily and we have stayed there on several occasions.

Teresa is a teacher in Giardini-Naxos, the seaside town next to Taormina in Sicily. When I first met Teresa she didn’t speak or understand any English, but we have been corresponding on Face Book and email and lately even on Twitter. Teresa has been studying English in Sicily but she tells me it is “molto difficile,” or very difficult. I understand because I thought the same thing about learning Italiano.

I am hopeful that Teresa will come to the U.S. next summer for a vacation and be able to enjoy the places here  that she has only read about. She wants to be able to have a better understanding of the language but as I learned, once you go somewhere and spend enough time to immerse yourself into the culture and lifestyle, you learn so much more.

Teresa is an excellent cook and her pasta pomodoro is amazing! I am so lucky to be able to call her my friend, la mia amica.
